YMCA – Bringing Cultural Heritage into the Digital Era The Challenge YMCA Thessaloniki holds cultural collections of significant historical value across its Historical Archive, Library, and Basketball Museum. Preserving such a diverse collection requires much more than simply converting physical material into digital files. The organization needed a structured approach for documenting, digitizing, managing, preserving, and ultimately showcasing its cultural assets through modern technologies. At the same time, the project needed to establish a digital foundation capable of supporting the continuous enrichment of the collections and providing researchers, visitors, sports enthusiasts, and the wider public with easier access to YMCA Thessaloniki’s heritage. The REPOX Approach REPOX is supporting YMCA Thessaloniki in transforming its valuable physical collections into an organized and accessible digital cultural repository. The ongoing project encompasses the organization, documentation, digitization, management, and digital presentation of cultural content from the Historical Archive, Library, and Basketball Museum. Through a structured digitization and documentation process, historical material is being transformed into high-quality digital assets, enriched with appropriate metadata, and organized to enable effective management, discovery, and long-term use. REPOX provides the technological framework needed to bring these different collections together within a modern digital environment, creating a consistent and sustainable approach to cultural heritage management. From Physical Collections to Digital Experiences The project goes beyond preservation. By combining cultural documentation with new technologies, YMCA Thessaloniki is creating the foundations for new ways of discovering and experiencing its collections. Material that was previously available primarily through physical archives, library collections, or museum spaces can be organized and prepared for broader digital access. This transformation helps connect heritage, technology, and storytelling, ensuring that historically important content is not only preserved but also made meaningful and discoverable for contemporary audiences.
